Ride the quiet backroads of Wisconsin into the region of dairy farms, breweries, orchards and wineries. The Wisconsin Hill Country Tour travels to a different town each night. Riding distances average 75 to 90 miles per day.
This area is a 100 mile by 150 mile rectangle in the southwest corner of the state. This landmass was missed by the glaciers which plowed and flatten most of the Midwest thousands of years ago. The hills of this region are formed by numerous river valleys separated by 500 foot ridges. This is a perfect cycling area because of the many farm roads that criss cross the lightly populated hillsides.
Our tour of Wisconsin Hill Country follows these flat farming valleys with an occasional climb up and over the ridges. Daily miles range from 75 to 90 miles with about 4,000 feet of climbing. Some of the country road can be steep with 10-15% grades. Low gears with a compact crank and freewheel of 36 x 28 are recommended. We have ridden these routes during five previous tours and are impressed with the road quality. Most days can be ridden by an average PAC Tour rider in about six hours. Recommended rider average speed is 10-15 mph with rest stops.
Wisconsin Hill County tour is for riders of intermediate cycling ability who are looking for a challenging week of cycling, but not as extreme as a PAC Tour cross country tour. Wisconsin Tour is intended to introduce riders to the PAC Tour experience - plenty of good riding with excellent support.
The roads are legendary. Read Fred Matheny's Muse below. Routes are planned to travel 75 – 90 miles per day with many desolate stretches of secluded farm roads. Some meals will be served at hometown restaurants that still cater to local farmers and families. Lunches are PAC Tour style in local parks or byways. Since Wisconsin is famous for their dairy products; many riders stop in the afternoon to sample local ice cream before heading to the motel.
Wisconsin Tour is unique to offer a great selection of destinations to ride each day while keeping the daily distances to 75-90 miles. Beside the countryside, each day will also offer other historic and scenic points of interest. We will stay at several classic towns including a tour of the New Glarus Brewery.
Wisconsin Hill Country Tour introduces new riders to PAC Tour. In the past Wisconsin Hill Country Tour has been filled with 75% of PAC Tour veterans who come and return to PAC Tour year after year. If you are thinking of joining a PAC Tour event this tour is a good one to try. We are limited to about 40 riders.
The Wisconsin Hill County Tour begins and ends at the Rodeway Inn, Beloit, Wisconsin. Beloit is located at the crossroads of I-90 running from Chicago to Madison and I-43 coming southeast out of Milwaukee.
If you are flying to the tour, the Milwaukee Mitchell (MKE) Airport is an hour drive by rental car. We recommend the Milwaukee Mitchell Airport as the closest and most convenient by rental car as there is no bus service.
The Chicago O'Hare (ORD) airport is two hours away. The Van Galder (Coach USA) Bus service runs every hour from O'Hare to South Beloit. Cost is about $27. This bus does not take bike boxes at peak times if the luggage area is full.
In South Beloit, a taxi is needed to take you from the bus station to the motel if you arrive before Saturday 10 AM.
PAC Tour will begin to make pick ups at the bus station on Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM. The Chicago Midway (MDW) airport is farther away and offers the same bus service. The bus website is: Coach USA
For your convenience, you can ship your bike case to the PAC Tour office and we will transport the case to the motel in Beloit. You can also arrange to have the bike case picked up at the PAC Tour office the following week.
The following Saturday morning - PAC Tour will drop off riders at the South Beloit bus station.
